Youths’ Transformative Journey to Tijuana
(ANS – Tijuana – February 21, 2025) – For many young people, stepping out of their comfort zone can be daunting. Yet, for 17 students from St. Francis HS, a Salesian school in Watsonville, Calif., their recent trip to Tijuana, Mexico, proved to be more than just a journey across borders—it was a profound experience of faith, service, and self-discovery.
A
Journey of Purpose
Every
year, a group of students embarks on this mission trip, a tradition that has
motivated transformation for many. Led by teacher Chris Croghan, who has
witnessed firsthand the lasting impact of this mission, the students travel for
many hours from Watsonville to Tijuana. They first fly to San Diego, where they
meet JC Montenegro, Western Province mission animation delegate. He drives them
to their final destination. Upon arrival, Fr. Juan Carlos Solis, SDB, warmly
welcomes them; his gratitude sets the tone for their week of service and
reflection.
“I
have seen how this mission trip changes the lives of young people,” says
Croghan. “This is why I keep coming back.”
Lessons Beyond the Classroom
For
these young volunteers, Tijuana became a classroom without walls, where lessons
on kindness, humility, and connection were imparted not through books but
through genuine interactions. Each participant returned home with a new
perspective, a changed heart, and a renewed commitment to live with purpose.
Cameron’s
Experience: Growth in Empathy and Confidence
Cameron
found himself learning the universal language of love and laughter. Despite his
limited Spanish, he used humor and outgoingness to break barriers. “I’ve heard
that many people admired my effort to communicate,” he shares. “I can
confidently say that I’ve grown into a more empathetic and extroverted person,
and I will do my best to continue the growth this trip has sparked in me.”
Arthur’s Experience: A Shoulder to Lean On
Arthur
discovered his strength in providing emotional support. “I’m a person who says
something and acts on it,” he reflects. “I can be a shoulder for others to cry
on, someone who will be there whenever they need an ear to rant to. I am
willing to go above and beyond for others, even at the cost of my own comfort.”
His journey revealed the power of presence and the deep connections that form
when people genuinely care for one another.
Natalie’s
Experience: Love in Unity
For
15-year-old Natalie, the trip was an eye-opening revelation of human
connection. Initially hesitant and reserved, she slowly broke down her barriers
and embraced the people of Tijuana with an open heart. “I was welcomed with
genuine kindness and selflessness,” she recalls. “Despite having ‘less,’ they
still found ways to give to us.” The generosity and joy of the community left
an indelible mark on her, reinforcing the idea that love knows no language and
kindness transcends all differences.
Sofia’s
Experience: Spreading Light and Love
Sofia
felt like she was indeed in her element. “A lot of people said this trip was
made for me,” she shares with joy. “People described me in such a beautiful way
that inspired me to be better. Knowing that I could inspire others fills me
with happiness.” Her presence on the trip reminded everyone of the power of
kindness and the ripples of change one person’s light can create in the world.
The Lasting Impact
The
Tijuana trip is more than just an annual excursion; it is a transformative
experience that shapes young hearts and minds. These students returned home
with a deeper appreciation for service, a renewed sense of purpose, and a
commitment to fostering human connection beyond borders.
Their
actions proved that love, kindness, and faith have no limits. Their reflections
showed that transformation happens when we step out of our comfort zones and
open ourselves to the beauty of human connection. Their journey may have lasted
only a few days, but the impact will last a lifetime.
