Homily for Wednesday
Week 1 of Advent
Dec. 4, 2024
Is 25: 6-10
Salesian HS, New Rochelle, N.Y.
In
God’s name, Isaiah makes 2 promises today.
1st, God will feed “all peoples” with “rich food and choice wines” (25:6)—a
constant Thanksgiving feast. 2d, God
will destroy death, “the veil that veils all peoples” (25:7). With these 2 promises, God will come to save
us (25:9).
Miracle of the Loaves & Fish
(Prayerbook of the Duc du Berry, 1413)
Jesus
Christ makes these promises real. The
meal that he provided for the hungry crowd in today’s gospel (Matt 15:29-37)
foreshadows the Eucharist, the “rich food and choice wine” of his own body and
blood, which nourish us for life, for a share in Jesus’ own risen life. In Christ’s resurrection, eternal life is
unveiled for all men and women who come to him to be saved from our sins and
from the death penalty that we pay for our sins. “Behold our God, to whom we look to save us!”
(25:9).
