Salesian Missions Funds New Chapel for Nigerian Catholics
(ANS – Imaweje, Nigeria – September 16, 2026) – The Salesians have been able to build a new Catholic chapel, dedicated to St. Joseph, in Imaweje, a rural community in Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, Nigeria, thanks to funds donated by Salesian Missions of New Rochelle. The new chapel will provide the growing Catholic community with a permanent place for worship, religious education, and other pastoral activities. The main structure of the chapel has already been completed, as have the roof and the plasterwork. Security doors and windows have been fitted, and electrical conduits and plumbing pipes have been laid in preparation for the installation of electrical systems, lighting, and sanitary facilities. It is expected that the chapel will facilitate preparation for the sacraments and youth ministry, while also providing pastoral support to young people and Catholic students living in the area, including those attending the Tai Solarin University of Education. Imaweje is a small community where Christians and Muslims live peacefully side by side, and where most people make a living from subsistence farming. For some time, Catholics in the area had been hoping to have a suitable place of worship. Therefore, parishioners say this new building “means so much to us, as the Catholic family of Imaweje.”
