Day Hike on the Long Path

Day Hike on the Long Path

On March 12 I went to the Don Bosco Retreat Center in Haverstraw to help with confessions in the evening at a Salesian youth retreat.  That gave me a chance for a day hike in Harriman State Park beforehand without an extra trip across the Hudson River.

I ventured to a section of the park that was new to me, the northwest corner north of US 6 bordering the USMA (I hope you can detect this on the map).

I parked in a lot off NY 293 near Barnes Lake, took a short woods road north to the Long Path (LP in photo labels), and went northeast up Blackcap Mt skirting the USMA boundary.

At the junction where a “seasonal” branch of the LP goes north into the USMA, there’s an Eagle Scout project bulletin board with notices and maps.

I stayed with the main trail, which runs east back down the mountain (somewhat steeply)

and crosses 293 again, then goes up Brooks Mt above Lake Massawippa.  The ridge hiking on both mountains is pleasant, more so when the sun came out now and then.

Eventually it got cloudy, tho.  There were gusts of wind now and then, giving a bit of chill, esp. when it was cloudy.  When I was ready, I turned back, but instead of re-ascending Blackcap Mt, I stayed with the road about ¼ mile back to the car.

Altogether, it was about 3 hours of hiking, and about 3 miles—which can’t be calculated precisely on the map.  Altho there was a lot of traffic on the highway, I didn’t see another soul on the trail.
