Programs for 150th Anniversary of Salesian Missionary Activity

Programs for the 150th Anniversary of Salesian Missionary Activity

By Fr. Francesco Motto, director emeritus of the Salesian Historical Institute

(ANS – Rome – Feb. 7, 2024)
 – “From the apostolic letter Maximun Illud (1919) to the Vatican II decree Ad Gentes (1965)” is the theme of an international conference promoted by the Salesian Historical Institute (ISS) in Rome, in collaboration with the school of theology of the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS) on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Salesian missions (1875-2025). The conference will take place on May 2-3, 2025, on the UPS campus. Numerous contributions will be offered by scholars, both Salesians and non-Salesians, from various parts of the world.

Within the overall framework of Vatican policies on the foreign missions in this 150-year period—policies often linked to forms of colonialism—numerous issues related to Salesian missionary action in the various continents will be addressed. The conference is open to all, and hospitality will be available at the UPS. Program and further information will be disseminated before this summer.

Also on the missionary theme, during the spring and autumn of 2025, five continental seminars are also scheduled, promoted by the sections of the Salesian History Association (ACSSA) of Africa-Madagascar, Latin America, South Asia, East Asia-Oceania, and Europe. ACSSA will explore the theme of missionary activity addressed not only to foreign nations, but also to the local Churches in a missionary perspective, embracing activity of various branches of the Salesian Family: Salesians, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, and others.

Approximately 100 people are expected to participate actively in the 2025 conference from among the Salesians of Don Bosco, FMAs, and members of the Salesian Family. The results will subsequently flow into another international conference scheduled for 2027 in Brazil, to commemorate the 1st FMA missionary expedition.
