“You cleanse the outside of the cup and dish; inside you’re filled with plunder and evil” (Luke 11: 39).
Our Lord doesn’t oppose
the rituals and rules of the Law. He
stresses something more important: inner
virtue, a spirit of generosity.
St. Paul also speaks of
the interior life, a life of faith that gives glory to the true God. A person’s faith leads him to seek truth,
connects him to God—this is righteousness—and leads to action, living according
to faith: devoutly and uprightly.
