Abp. Shaw HS Hosts Boot Camp

Archbishop Shaw HS
Hosts Student Boot Camp

(ANS – Marrero – La. – August 4, 2025) –
Archbishop Shaw High School, an archdiocesan school administered by the Salesians since its founding in 1962, rolled out the welcome mat for over 125 incoming students during its 4th annual “boot camp,” a 3-day orientation designed to ease the transition into high school and foster a spirit of community. The school is located in Marrero, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans and takes its name from Abp. John W. Shaw, archbishop of New Orleans (1918-1934), who brought the Salesians to his archdiocese in 1933.

Launched by Fr. Steve Ryan, SDB, and inspired by Don Bosco’s famous ice-breaking encounter with Bartholomew Garelli on Dec. 8, 1841, the program encourages students to feel at home before classes officially begin. The camp featured team-building activities, campus tours, and interactive sessions introducing students to the Salesian values at the core of school life. Forty upperclassmen from grades 9 to 12 volunteered as mentors, guiding newcomers through the ins and outs of campus routines and academic expectations. Both organizers and students praised the boot camp for cultivating new friendships and reinforcing a sense of brotherhood.
