The annual retreat
day offered to all the Catholic Scouts
of the archdiocese—Boys Scouts,
Girl Scouts, Venturers,
Cubs, and Brownies—took
place on Nov. 22 at Marydell Faith & Life Center in Nyack, a delightful site along the New York Palisades (a couple of miles north of the Tappan Zee Bridge).
Participation decreased
this year to 107 boys and girls.
It’s pretty
much a mandatory
affair for all the Boy Scouts taking
the Ad Altare
Dei course, and that grouping
was well represented
as it always
is. The fall-off in attendance seemed
to be mostly
among older and younger Scouts
(only one Cub, no Brownies
this year), and there were only a couple of girls present
besides staff. There were a couple
dozen adults, some taking part in the 2 formation/training options
offered (Scouter Development
and Emblems Training)
and some present
with the Scouts
in various capacities.
Emily worked hard to get active participation in her talk. |
The day included a little bit of prayer, a couple of witness talks by older scouts Nick Goebelbecker and Emily Roff, an inspirational talk by Deacon Peter Haight (filling in for someone who didn’t show), day-long opportunity for Reconciliation, a short service project, recreation, and the Sunday vigil Mass with archdiocesan Scout chaplain Msgr. Tony Marchitelli presiding and your humble blogger concelebrating. As he’s done for last couple of years, Msgr. Tony explained to the Scouts what was going on at different points in the liturgy, starting with the vestments and going thru Mass.

The five lads taking Ad Altare Dei with Donna Ragusa, Tom O’Grady, and me this year were all there and said that they had a good day.

Jerry Scanlan, chairman of the Archdiocesan Catholic
Committee on Scouting, wrote afterward:
“Once again, our retreat was a great success: great location, great weather, great presentations, great liturgy, and great participants!
The only thing that could have been better would have been more participants.
The retreat has been growing
steadily for the past almost
ten years, but this year had a drop off…. More than likely
it was because
we need to [im] prove
and redouble our marketing efforts
for next year.”
Tom Kelly, the Catholic Committee’s liaison with the
archdiocese, extended thanks to the “many
hands [that] make light work”
for the success of the retreat:
Thank you everyone for your help in making the retreat another success.
